[ARCHIVED] Call to Artists: Urbandale Art Park Exhibition

The Urbandale Public Art Committee invites you to submit an application to participate in the Urbandale Art Park Exhibition. The Urbandale Art Park was established as a permanent outdoor sculpture park with annually changing exhibits.  The Art Park is located at 3600 86th Street, just south of Douglas Avenue at Urbandale City Hall.

The Urbandale Public Art Committee will oversee the selection of four sculptures which will be displayed in the Urbandale Art Park for an annual exhibition during 2022-2023.  Selected artists will receive a $1,500 stipend for loaning the work for the exhibition time period. There is no application fee.  

The exhibited artwork must be the original work of the artist (in concept and execution) and available for purchase. The advertised sale price should include a 25% commission that the Urbandale Public Art Committee will retain on pieces sold in the exhibit year. 

The sculpture must be able to be bolted to a 3’x3’ steel pad. It must be suitable for year round outdoor public display and constructed in a manner which will not cause safety or liability problems, or maintenance, during the exhibition period. The artwork shall remain for the duration of the exhibition period even if it is sold. Photos of the artwork may be used by the City of Urbandale in marketing and educational materials. The Artist shall be responsible for all costs, equipment and labor necessary for the delivery, installation, and removal of the artwork.

 

Entries:

If you are interested in having your work considered, please submit a completed application form (download here) including:

  • A narrative of the artist’s concept and date of creation
  • A detailed explanation of how the piece will be secured or anchored when installed
  • Visual photographs depicting several views of the artwork (in JPEG or PDF format)
  • A brief artist biography
  • List of professional references

Project Timeline:

  • Call to Artists issued: October 11, 2021
  • Submissions due: November 15, 2021 (1:00 p.m. CST)
  • Selection deliberations: December 2021
  • Parks & Recreation Commission and City Council approval process: December 2021
  • Selection Notifications to Artists: January 4, 2022
  • Delivery and installation of artwork completed: March 2022
  • Exhibition ends/deadline for removal of artwork: March 2023
  • The City of Urbandale reserves the right to change the project timeline as necessary

Selection:

  • Works will be reviewed and selected by the Urbandale Public Art Committee.  The Committee will use the following selection criteria:
  • Required Artwork Characteristics: 
  • Suitability for family viewing 
  • Display of high quality technical skill, imagination, innovation 
  • Fits on the site (3’ x 3’ steel pad)
  • Suitability for outdoor display in adverse weather conditions 
  • Soundness of construction, durability and safety of artwork 
  • Originality and availability for purchase

Location of the Artwork: 

  • The Artwork will be located in the Urbandale Art Park, just south of Douglas Avenue and the Urbandale City Hall at 3600 86th Street.  

Installation:

  • Artists are responsible for all costs, equipment and labor necessary for the delivery, installation and removal of their work and assume all risk and damage to their work before and during installation and during and after removal. The sculpture will be insured by the City of Urbandale up to a maximum of $12,500 after installation while on exhibition. (The established sales price less the 25% commission fee payable to the City of Urbandale not to exceed $12,500). A level, 4’x4’ concrete pad with an anchored 3’x3’ steel plate will be provided for securing the sculptures. Work not appropriate for installation onto a concrete base/steel plate, will be addressed on a case-by-case basis with the Artist. The Artists will install the work under the supervision of City personnel. Lighting is provided at the locations. The Artists shall affix their artwork to the steel plate with locking bolts to prevent tampering or removal of the artwork by non-authorized parties.

Sales:

  • Each selected piece of artwork will have a pre-determined sales price, up to a maximum of $12,500. In the event that the artwork is sold during the exhibition, the artwork shall remain for the duration of the exhibition period. The City shall retain a 25% commission if the Work is purchased during the exhibition period whether or not such sale is a direct result of the exhibition.  The City of Urbandale may purchase the exhibited artwork for placement at a permanent location within the City.  If so chosen, the artist agrees to sell the artwork to the City for the predetermined price, minus the 25% commission the City was entitled to retain.  In addition, if another party is interested in purchasing the artwork, the artist agrees to provide the City the first right of refusal to purchase.
