Residents in the western neighborhoods (north of Douglas between 142nd Street and 184th Street) are experiencing a disruption of water service due to a 20" water main being struck during a construction project. We are working now to restore it.
The Boil Advisory has been lifted. All samples have returned clear and the water is safe for consumption.
The Urbandale Water Utility is collecting water samples from various points in the affected area. These samples are undergoing a thorough analysis to verify the quality and safety of the water. As an added precaution, we strongly recommend that residents continue to boil their water until further notice. Boiling is an effective measure to eliminate any potential contaminants. We anticipate being able to share the results of these comprehensive tests in the morning on Saturday, September 16.
A precautionary boil advisory remains in effect for those within the impacted service area. At approximately 2 AM this morning services were restored to property owners impacted by the water service disruption. Customers in the impacted area may experience air in their plumbing as the Urbandale Water Utility continues to flush hydrants and operates valves in the area. More information will be shared here when the boil advisory is lifted.
Water service was restored to all affected residents early this morning. You should flush your lines by running all cold water taps in your home for for five minutes. If you have a single-lever faucet, set it to run cold water. Begin with the lowest faucet in your home and then open the other faucets one at a time, moving from your lowest floor to your highest. After five minutes, turn off your faucets in reverse order, from highest to lowest. You should also flush your refrigerator's water lines. Do not drink the water without first boiling it. Boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. The water may be used for bathing, laundry, and other similar purposes.
The Urbandale Water Utility anticipates that water service will be restored tomorrow morning, Thursday, September 14. This is an estimated time, and more information will be shared here as it becomes available. When water pressure is restored do not drink the water without first boiling it. Boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water.
Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. The water may be used for bathing, laundry, and other similar purposes.
Following the repair and repressurization of the system, samples will be collected to ensure water safety. Boiling water is a precautionary measure until bacterial sample results are available. We will share information here when the results are in and the advisory is lifted. We anticipate this process to take 24 to 48 hours after the system pressure is fully restored.
Thank you for your patience, understanding, and cooperation as the Urbandale Water Utility works to resolve this situation and ensure your continued safety. Read the full boil advisory here.
The Urbandale Water Utility is recommending that residents in the affected area boil their water while we continue to fix the water main.
