Media Inquiries, Interviews & Requests
Reporters, film crews, editors, producers, and persons in similar occupations should contact and work directly with Derek Zarn, Urbandale's Communications Specialist. Derek will assist you in scheduling interviews with staff and elected officials as well as allocating resources and finding locations for filming in Urbandale. The Communications Team ensures that the Urbandale community is kept well informed by helping to promote awareness of events, programs, initiatives, services, and opportunities in Urbandale. History and Role
A communications and marketing role was formally added to the City organization in July 2017. This role supports the City of Urbandale's strategic priorities and the organizational mission of being a financially responsible government providing exceptional quality municipal services, which are responsive to community needs, making Urbandale a great place to live.
About the Team
The City's external and internal communications efforts are led by Derek Zarn, Communications Specialist. Internally, one or two staff members from each department represent the Communications Team. These employees provide departmental and professional perspectives on communications.

Derek joined the City of Urbandale in July of 2017 and received his Bachelor's Degree from Iowa State University. Derek has held various positions in design, marketing, and technology at the City of Ames, Iowa State University, and private industry.
Lucas joined the City of Urbandale as a communications intern in January of 2022. He is currently pursuing his Bachelor's Degree in Journalism and Mass Communications from Iowa State University, and plans to graduate in the Spring of 2022.
