Sergeant Andrew Dobbins


Sergeant Dobbins joined the Urbandale Police Department as a Reserve Officer in 1998 and became a full-time Patrol Officer in 2002.  

Sergeant Dobbins has served in many areas of the Urbandale Police Department.  He has been a member of the Suburban Emergency Response Team – SERT , the Mid-Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force – MINE , and assigned as a Task Force Officer at DEA during his career with Urbandale.  Sergeant Dobbins has also served in the Support Services Division.  In 2016 he received the Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service in Policing for his work with the Culture of Integrity program.

Sergeant Dobbins was promoted to his current rank as Sergeant and was assigned as an Patrol Supervisor till January 2024. Sergeant Dobbins is currently assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division.  

Sgt. Nick Hazel

Sergeant Nick Hazel


Sergeant Hazel joined the Urbandale Police Department in 2008. He has served in the patrol and criminal investigation divisions within the police department. Sergeant Hazel was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2020 and was assigned to the patrol division until 2024. He is currently assigned to the criminal investigation division. Sergeant Hazel holds a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice from Purdue Global University.   

Sergeant Hazel has served on the Suburban Emergency Response Team (SERT) since 2011 as an entry team member and currently as an entry team leader. Additionally, he is a firearms instructor and honor guard team member. Throughout his time with the Urbandale Police Department Sergeant Hazel has filled various instructor roles and collateral duties for the department to include field training officer - supervisor, bike patrol officer - instructor - supervisor and less lethal munitions instructor.     

Before joining the Urbandale Police Department Sergeant Hazel served the Story County Sheriff’s Office as a civilian detention officer and a member the underwater search and rescue team. Sergeant Hazel attended the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in 2003 and served with the Postville Police Department as a police officer and member of a regional tactical team in Northeast Iowa until 2008.

Sergeant Hazel served in the Iowa Army National Guard with the 1st/113th Cavalry Regiment from 1997 to 2003. He was deployed to Kuwait in 2001 and promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2002.
