Reserve Unit
The Urbandale Police Reserve Unit is comprised of volunteer reserve officers who serve in a similar capacity to full-time police officers. The Reserve Unit is a highly trained, flexible and dedicated unit that assists the police department in a variety of ways.

Join the Department
To join the Urbandale Police Department Reserve Unit you must qualify through an application process. This process includes a background check, physical exam, psychological exam, and polygraph examination. The application must be approved by the Chief of Police before continuing through the process.
Requirements
In order to join the Urbandale Police Reserve Unit you must meet the following criteria:
- Be a citizen of the United States and the State of Iowa
- Be at least 21 years old
- Live in Urbandale or the surrounding area
- Maintain a valid Iowa driver's license
- Obtain a high school diploma or GED
- Pass a physical and eye exam set by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy
Training
Reserve Officers will be trained to the standards of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. This training is done in-house and consists of several weeks of training. In addition, Reserve Officers must complete ongoing training specific to the assigned division.
