Adopt-a-Trail is a public service program for volunteers to assist the city in keeping trails beautiful. Volunteers / sponsors are responsible for trash pick-up 2 times per month and reporting any vandalism. This program is open to community groups, businesses, churches and individual citizens.
Any interested organization, individuals and neighborhood groups can care for their "own" section of trail. You may adopt a favorite site or the Parks and Recreation Department can suggest a trail section needing to be adopted.
The expectation is that the volunteer will pick up litter a minimum of twice a month, or more if necessary and place trash bags in trash receptacles. You would help pick up and remove any broken glass, limbs, etc., but would not use any power tools. Also, you can serve as an extra set of eyes for the Parks and Recreation Department to watch for downed signs, damaged benches, and vandalism.
The Parks and Recreation Department has a supply of special refuse bags and gloves to be used for the Adopt-a-Trail program.
Adopt-a-Trail signs will be placed on the trails to recognize those volunteers who have taken part of their valuable time to keep our trails clean and preserving this most valuable asset for the community.
If you would like to learn more or have a representation come talk to your group, please email Parks and Recreation or call 515-278-3963. You can apply with our online application or download our mail in Adopt a Trail Application.
